Beach-body Ready: Let’s Talk About Cellulite

Some of us have it. Some of us want to prevent it. Now bikini season is here, and we want to soak up the sun while feeling as unself-conscious as possible.

Well, I have good news, and… not as good news.

Let’s start with some basics. What, exactly, is cellulite? It is uneven fatty tissue beneath your skin.

If you’re reading this and you’re female, you are more likely to get cellulite. Certain people are also genetically predisposed to it. Weight gain can make it more noticeable, but thin people can have cellulite, also.

Often, cellulite is one of those lovely surprises that we encounter as we get older. And while we generally don’t like the way it looks, the good thing is that you do not need to see a doctor or get it “treated.”

The bad thing is, once you have cellulite, you cannot “get rid of it.”

There are, however, things that you can do to make it less noticeable.

First of all, these factors can exacerbate cellulite:

  • stress
  • inactive lifestyle
  • hormonal birth control

Therefore, lessening stress and focusing on being more active could help make cellulite less visible to the naked eye.

If you are currently cellulite-free and want to stay that way, you want to focus on the same things. Remaining active and trying to lessen stress as much as possible might prevent or delay the visible appearance of cellulite.

If you already have visible cellulite, the best way to reduce the appearance of it is losing weight by eating healthy and exercising regularly. Some people who have worked to make their cellulite less noticeable recommend exercise that focuses on the area you are trying to make smooth. For a lot of cellulite sufferers, the cellulite is most noticeable around their seat and thighs. You could participate in an exercise that focuses on those areas (*cough, cough* Barre Bee Fit…), or do moves at home that focus on those areas. A fan favorite? Squats.

And remember, while cellulite is not pretty, it is also not unnatural. Confidence makes all women beautiful. So focus on reducing the appearance of cellulite if you wish, but wear that bathing suit and have fun outdoors whether you are cellulite-free or not!
